Internet Security FAQ

What is UTM?

Unified Threat Management is a firewall, VPN, IDP and anti-virus working together against any known threat or in the case of heuristics, unknown threats.

What are heuristics?

Heuristic scan technology enables anti-virus software to recognize new viruses based on their resemblance to similar viruses the software already knows. To do this, the software looks for "virus-like" characteristics in the files you’ve asked it to scan. The presence of a sufficient number of these characteristics in a file leads the software to identify the file as potentially infected with a new or previously unidentified virus.

What is a firewall?

A combination of specialized hardware and software set up to monitor traffic between an internal network and an external network (ie the Internet). Its primary purpose if for security and is designed to keep unauthorized outsiders from tampering with or accessing information on a networked computer system.

What is a VPN?

A virtual private network is a private data network that makes use of the public telecommunication infrastructure, maintaining privacy through the use of a tunnelling protocol and security procedures. The idea of the VPN is to give the company the same capabilities at much lower cost by using the shared public infrastructure rather than a private one.

What is IDP?

Intrusion Detection and Prevention provides the ability to detect and block potentially malicious behaviour from harming your business critical information. It is integrated into some firewalls, including Network Box.
